Practical 10:
1. Describe in a paragraph, the most important lesson that you had learnt in your EIR journey.

In my EIR cds, I have learned and gained a lot of knowledge. Such as, using search engine effectively and exposing to different search facilities such as metacrawler, yahoo directory , Invisible web(Datababse)), I used to search for information from search engine by typing the whole sentence, but now, i learnt that we can use boolean operators and keyword to get what we need to find. In addition, there are many features that we can use for searching. If I was not in EIR, I would not have able to learn all these techniques. All these technique will be with me forever and add on to my knowledge which will be an advantage over others.
This is definitely a good learning experience for me.

a. Which criteria did you use to evaluate talkingcock.com? Why did you choose this criteria?

b. How did you feel about participating in the role plays?

Purpose - This is a political website discussing about the political events happening in Singapore.

Currency - This website are up-to-date following the lastest affairs news.

Presentation and Arrangement - The website is neatly presented and arranged, It has many funny images and quotes to entertain viewers.

Overall Quality - Overall quality of this website is good, humourous. Making fun of our PAP and voicing out their unhappiness are indeed interesting for viewers to view.

Participating in role plays is important as it helps us to voice out our views regarding the website. We are also able to see what other users comment about and their unhappiness.

What role does YouTube play in your life? Can you live without YouTube?

Youtube played an important role in my life, why do i say that? it is because everytime i need to find informations about the things that i need to research about, i will try to search for a video that is relevant to my research. For me, i always like to find out more about motorbikes, youtube provides me alot of videos about the motorbikes and how the engines works etc.
I do not think that i can live without youtube, in my freetime, i always search for videos to kill my time.

How can you use YouTube for research purposes?
Youtube provides me many useful videos for research, just type in the research word that you need and Youtube will provide alot of different videos from different users.

My Dream Holiday( Practical 8 & 9)

My dream holiday is to visit Barcelona, the histories and the old architectures is the factors that attracted the most. Spanish cuisine is my favourite!

Why did I choose to go to my dream holiday destination?

Spanish cuisine is my favourite food, the taste and the decoration is very appealing, in Singapore, we have places that sell Spanish cuisine, but i hope that i can try it at Spain myself.

This is the picture of the Olympic tower in Barcelona, we can see that the structure of the monument is very unique, and i hope to view it personally one of these days.

This is the picture of the national art museum at night in Barcelona, although i am not a art person myself, but the scenery made me feel like visit the museum so much, i do not think that i will be able to view it in Singapore.

This is the pictures of Barcelona soccer stadium, this is the place i would like to go the most. I am a Barcelona soccer fan, i would like to visit the stadium one day and hopefully i would be able to watch a match of the hometeam! Go Barcelona Go!!!!!!!!!

Reliability is the key factor that i had used for my research, knowing the places and location is very important as getting lost in a foreign country is very common. The site which i have choosen is reliable and they are the offical website of the location i would like to visit.

Practical 6:
The invisible web(datebase) provides us with many useful and relevant information on the topic we are searching on. It includes (title, subject, date, content, report etc.) whereas other search engines might not have it. This allows the researcher to find the piece of informations they want easily.

Other search engine might not have the information that the user want, and they returns alot of useless informations.

Database will be updated frequently by authors, so the informations will be up-to-date and accurate. Throughout the years, database will be expanding tremediously, users will definitely benefit from it.

Yes, i will definitely use invisible web(database) research for my respective diplomas. From the database, i can easily retrieve the informations i want for my diploma rather than finding in other search engines. This will save me time and the informations are more accurate.

a. What benefits do you get when using different search facilities to search for resources related to your topic?
b. How do you feel about using site feeds in your blog? Would you use this in future?

Having different search facilities benefit me alot as i will be able to search for more revelant informations that i need. As different search facilities provides me different results, i can expose myself with ideas for my research and it will not constrain me from using other search facilities.Example: Google, Yahoo Directory etc.
Site feeds reduces the time needed to update the informations myself, as it will automatically updates. i will be sure that my informations is always up-to-date. I will definitely use site feeds on my blog or websites as people will know that my informations are definitely up-to-date.

Among young teens (aged 13 to 15), about one in five smokes worldwide.
Between 80,000 and 100,000 children worldwide start smoking every day - roughly half of whom live in Asia.
Evidence shows that around 50% of those who start smoking in adolescent years go on to smoke for 15 to 20 years.

Some Tips to Quit Smoking

1) Identify the times you are most likely to smoke. For example, do you tend to smoke when feeling stressed? When you are out at night with friends? While you are drinking coffee? When you are bored? While you are driving?

2) Keep a diary to help you determine such risky times. Record each time you have a cigarette, including time of day and what you are doing.

3) Make a plan about what you will do instead of smoking at those times that you are most likely to smoke. For example, drink tea instead of coffee -- tea may not trigger the desire for a cigarette. Or, take a walk when feeling stressed. Remove ashtrays and cigarettes from the car. Place pretzels or hard candies there instead. Pretend-smoke with a straw.

4) Let all of your friends, family, and co-workers know of your plan to stop smoking and your quit date. Just being aware that they know can be a helpful reminder and motivator.

5) Prior to your quit date, start reducing your cigarette use, including decreasing the number and strength of the cigarettes. However, DON'T do this simply to make your diary "look good!" Get rid of all of your cigarettes just prior to the quit date and clean out anything that smells like smoke, such as clothes and furniture.

6) Avoid smoke-filled settings and situations in which you are more likely to smoke.

7) Exercise to relieve urges to smoke.

Symptoms

How severe your symptoms are depends on how long you smoked and how many cigarettes you smoked each day. Common symptoms include:
-An intense craving for nicotine
-Tension
-Irritability
-Headaches
-Difficulty in concentrating
-Drowsiness and trouble sleeping
-Increased appetite and weight gain.
A milder form of nicotine withdrawal, involving some or all of these symptoms, can occur when a smoker switches from regular to low-nicotine cigarettes or significantly cuts down on the number of cigarettes smoked.

A) Were you impressed by google’s search functions/features? Why?
B)How do you feel about participation in discussion forum? Is it helpful for your research? Do you feel anxious about talking to others you do not know?
C)Why must you do citation and bibliography?

a)Yes, I am impressed by Google's search functions and features. Compare to other search engines, Google has an advance search that the user can specifically enter the informations that need to get the exact information they need.
b)This is definitely the first time that i am participating in a discussion forum. The information that users replied are useful and it made me have a clearer idea of what I am researching on. I think that i will not be anxious as it will be posted online and we might not even know who are we talking to.
c)We need to acknowledge and hightlighting the source from where our information come from to prevent copyright and plagarism.

Alan Carr is good because he explains exactly what smoking is, he takes it all the myths apart and spells it out. Try this: Carr tells you in the book that he is leading you up to point where you have your last cigarette but he gives you a let-out clause and tells you not to do it if you are not ready and to try again later. And that doesn't frighten smokers and they can allow themselves to have a read. I did it by reading a few pages every day.
